Play As Nigel Wimble, An Award Winning Filmmaker
Grab your lighting equipment and your camera and head into the suburbs for the next hard-hitting interview in your documentary A Guide for The Isolated.
Created by the developers at Point Bleep Studios, as part of this year’s Ludum Dare Game Jam, How To Cope With Boredom and Loneliness features you as the award-winning filmmaker Nigel Wimble who takes his talents into the home of one particular Harold Fletcher, a 43-year-old man who has spent the last 30 years of his life in his room alone with his castigating mother, overstuffed plush rabbit, and his active imagination to keep him company.
One Very Unique Story-Line…
In a line up next to Point Bleep’s other titles, How To Cope With Boredom and Loneliness stands true to the studios’ usual simple gameplay meets snarky humor formula.
Laughable dialogue has been a staple for this team since the beginning; however, they take it a step further and provide us with some truly comical voice-acting. From Nigel’s own flowery, nasally, remarks, to Harold’s hapless deliverables regarding his lonely life, we are pulled along a truly hilarious, and rather saddening, story-line.
What You Can Expect – Gameplay
The engaging story telling via memories and conversation between both Nigel and Harold and Harold and his mother, Margaret, are extremely well done and pull you into a world that’s the perfect combination of wanton silliness and realism allowing you to follow and laugh at this satirical documentary simulator for the better part of an hour.
By the end, you’ll be replaying the game at least two more times in order to hear the rest of the inspired and brow raising writing. But all good things must come to an end eventually; unfortunately, your time with How To Cope With Boredom and Loneliness ends a little too soon and leaves you wanting more.
Great Game But We Need More!
As a stand-alone title, How To Cope does a great job but I’d love to see it coupled with Nigel’s other episodes in his soon to be critically acclaimed documentary.
If the developers had as much fun with creating this as I think they did I can only hope that they will consider completing the entire series to gives us a few more laughs especially if they have more entertaining characters like Margaret and Harold for us to snicker at, and in some cases, take pity on.
Hopefully this is not the only title of the A Guide For the Isolated series that we’ll have to enjoy.
Although too short and simple to be a game that I will come back to, I will most certainly be remembering this title, and the laughs it brought, in years to come.
As a part of the Ludum Dare Game Jam and created in no more than 72 hours I’d say that this game is worth every minute it lasts. And the folks at Point Bleep Studios should consider extending Harold’s song and producing it for fans to enjoy!
